ConCarolinas

  • Hilton Charlotte University Place 8629 J M Keynes Drive Charlotte, NC, 28262 United States (map)

ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre multi-media convention. We call ourselves a sci-fi/fantasy convention but in truth we cover all speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy and horror. We host a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like SciFi Karaoke, concerts, a charity auction, a short film festival, SCA events, children’s events like Pickle Ball and Live Action Candy Crush, groups celebrating fandoms like Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and many more. We have a Dealer Room with vendors selling unique fandom related items. At ConCarolinas you will find something for everyone!

Adapting Your Novel for TV
How do you adapt a book for the small screen? It’s a very different process than adapting for film, with television you have to expand your story across episodes and seasons. In this workshop, we'll take you through the book-to-TV process—looking at recent examples as well as those of well-known shows you already love—and help you craft everything from pitches and loglines to one-sheets and show bibles. By the end of the session, you will have started transforming your book into something producers and studio executives will jump at!
Featuring: JD Jordan (moderator), Robert Bevan, A.J. Hartley, John G. Hartness

Friday, May 31, 7:00pm, 3rd Floor Room

Weird Westerns
Sentient locomotives and mechanical coyotes, haunted revolvers and werewolf sheriffs...the myth of the American west has become a popular place for fantasy and SF authors to play. Let’s talk about why it lends itself so well to the weird.

Saturday, June 1, 9:00am, Walden
Design Your Cover
Step 1: You wrote a book. Now you need to market it and despite the cliches, readers really do judge a book by it's cover. Your novel needs to stand out from the crowd, both on the shelf and in the search results, and no matter if you're self-published or with a small or large press, you might be the one responsible for the cover. This panel will take you through the basic process of researching, designing, and testing book covers so you can create, critique, and market the best possible face for your work.
Featuring: JD Jordan (moderator), Robert Bevan, Melissa McArthur, S.H. Roddey / Siobhan Kinkade, Matthew Saunders

I Got Better
Death and resurrection, or false deaths often play a key role in speculative fiction. What are our favorite "return to life" moments? Which ones don't really work and why? And what must a writer do to make these moments serve the story and their audience?
